The heart of our practice is powered by the idea of Ma. Understood in Japan as “the space between”, Ma is a concept that explores the dynamic relationship between object and environment. Attending to this relationship allows us to balance function and the felt experience to produce joy.

We enjoy the challenges that arise in planning, designing, and building. While they can seem daunting, we approach their resolution in a spirit of teamwork with our clients, engineers, and builders. Our work is grounded in pragmatics to make the visionary possible.

Our Team

Each of us helps move the practice of environmental design to higher accountability for how the world should function. Our individual efforts propel Studio Ma’s collaborative nature.

Our History

Christopher Alt, Christiana Moss and principal emeritus Dan Hoffman founded Studio Ma in 2003 upon winning a design competition about improving water delivery that was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Our entry “Portals + Loops” turned the Salt River, which travels through metropolitan Phoenix, into a recreational and cultural destination by restoring ecosystems while adding trails and interpretive exhibits. This formative commission cast Studio Ma’s focus on bioclimatic regenerative design, social equity and true public architecture. Now led by principals Christiana Moss, Christopher Alt, and Tim Keil, we foster a creative and growing practice that joins the resilience of the desert southwest with egalitarian and progressive values. As we have grown, Studio Ma has taken on diverse commissions across the United States and overseas that advance ecologically regenerative design and a better society.

I have worked with hundreds of design professionals. Studio Ma is the most creative and holistic firm with which we have worked, they recognize from the start that campus planning and building design should be more than the final product.
